The Folklore and the popular culture
of Brazil were formed by
a combination of three main influences: European by the
Portuguese and Spanish colonisation; Black by the African
slaves that were shipped out to Brazil, and Indian by the
natives
from Brazil.
Afro & Makulele are dances which
celebrates the end of the
sugar-cane harvest. Capoeira is a mix of dance, fight
and music
which mirrors movements in the animal kingdom, one of the
strongest expression of the Brazilian Culture. Samba
de Roda is
characterised by sensual movements of the legs, feet and hips
of the beautiful Bahian girls. Axé (known
as Samba Reggae as
well), fuses the Bahian Samba de Roda with Jamaican Reggae
to
create the new genre. Puxada de Rede (Fishermen's
Dance) still
seen on the beaches in Bahia, in which Iemanjá, the
Goddess of
the sea, is greeted by the fishermen and their wives,
through
dances and songs asking a good fishery. Orixás,
procession of
the "mediums"who went into transe with the
African Gods (orixás).
